Flight simulators and aircraft combat games serve a solid niche for those of us that like to take to the skies when we're not doing other things with our computers. Here's a roundup of the top ones you can download today, with prices from free to reasonable and the focus from arcade-style action to ultra-realistic flight sim. They're not only great games, they're some of the best Mac games you can find.
X-Plane is without peer on the Mac. Calling X-Plane a game isn't just wrong, but it's insulting: X-Plane is the definitive flight simulator for the platform. Intricately detailed, it's also incredibly scalable - X-Plane runs on mobile, oz77n home Macs and PCs, and also operates as a detailed professional-grade aviation simulator.
More than 30 aircraft are available in the default installation: You can fly everything from a single-engine Cessna 172 — the most popular airplane in the world — to a B-2 bomber. The app models fixed and rotary wing aircraft both, along with tons of atmospheric conditions that affect flight. It even simulates what'd be like to fly the Space Shuttle. More than 1,400 additional aircraft models can be downloaded online. And you can fly almost anywhere: Land at more than 33,000 airports worldwide, touch down on an aircraft carrier and more.
JetOnline is a multiplayer simulation game. JetOnline aims at creating a realistic, fun and challanging cooperative game. The goal of JetOnline is to create a game with something such as Battlefields graphics and Arma3's simulation. We aim at creating a multiplayer game with a realistic experience.
A free demo is available, so don't let the price tag scare you off. Given the incredible level of detail and the huge ecosystem that supports X-Plane, it's well worth the money if you take your flight simulation seriously.

FlightGear
An open source flight simulator, FlightGear is a bit more do-it-yourself than some of the other apps in this list, but it's still remarkable and definitely worth checking out. You download the central app, airplane models and scenery separately. Hundreds of aircraft models are available for download.
FlightGear's rough open source edges show, but if you're a developer or a code tinkerer, there's fun to be had here. And for everyone else, plenty of fun airplanes to fly and scenery to explore.

WarBirds
Total Sims' WarBirds flight combat game has going since 1995. Take to the skies behind the yoke of dozens of legendary World War II-era aircraft. Single player mode consists of 20 training modules, 12 instant missions, and five different Free Flight modes. What's more, you can play offline for free, for as long as you want.
But the real meat of this game is in online play, which does incur a monthly fee to continue to play. You go on raids with squadrons of other real-world players as you reenact many famous battles of World War II. Total Sims is a bit funky with their Mac support; their FAQs reference Apple's GameSprocket technology, which went out the door when Classic Mac OS gave way to OS X more than a decade ago. But it goes to show just how long WarBirds has been on the platform, too.
- $13.95 (monthly, free offline play) - Download now
Falcon 4.0: Allied Force
Graphic Simulations has been making flight sims for the Macintosh since the early 1990s. Falcon 4.0: Allied Force is the latest iteration of its classic F-16 Falcon flight simulator, taking you to the Balkans and the Korean peninsula for realistic combat missions.
Arm your aircraft with realistic weapons and ordnance, then fly missions deep into hostile territory with a dynamic campaign engine that changes things every time you play.

Sky Gamblers: Storm Raiders
Atypical Games' entry is an absolute must if you want to dogfight World War II style. The game features terrific graphics and easy to understand gameplay. There are single-player missions here but where the game really shines is in multiplayer dogfighting combat, which has been the series' strength. A variety of different online game modes test your skill, like Capture The Flag and Last Man Standing.
Sky Gamblers supports iCloud and Game Center - any progress you make in game can be saved to the cloud. It also supports a joystick or gamepad, which is a must for any flight sim, as far as I'm concerned. $5 gets you plenty of game play, but there are in app purchases that let you unlock new customization features and new airplane models.
- $4.99 - Download now
F/18 Carrier Landing II Pro
It's obviously a port of a game that originated on iOS, but it's lots of fun regardless. Take off and land from aircraft carriers and airstrips in some of the most legendary combat aircraft flying: the F-A/18 Super Hornet, F-14 Super Tomcat, F-16 Fighting Falcon and MiG-29K are all represented, along with the Harrier, F35B Lightning II and more.
RORTOS calls itself maker of the most advanced flight sims for mobile, and they're pretty snazzy on the Mac too. More than thirty missions along with a half-dozen training missions and free flight so you can buzz around on your own with no agenda.

It's a war flight simulator, not too complicated but not an arcade either. You have a very gratifying feeling of being on a plane looking around yourself, looking at the plane from the outside, while you can see the weapon reaching the enemy among other views, but all simply and harmoniously with the keyboard. You are required to take off and land even to refuel or rearm the plane. This simple matter of landing is already a differential that makes the simulation be immersive looking real. and landing is challenging but not nearly impossible .. it's affordable. Navigation is simple so that you understand and locate easily on the map. The missions are varied and quite interesting. One of the incredible sensations is landing at an airport at night or after a tough mission watching the sunset as you return home. The game is perfect, it would be awesome if they had improved the graphics without moving anything at all.

one of the best category simulators I've ever played. I don't understand how they haven't done anything so good gameplay to date. At least I didn't find it. They invest a lot in graphics and forget about good and simple gameplay.

Works great, although clicking 'hints/notes' from the main menu seems to make the game unresponsive.

U realize this is the f-22 Raptor .. like 22 years later. RIGHT!
AND I'm in a POLICE RAPO or HAPO community city, have been tortured by the millionaires per capita counsel, owe 53,000 to its leader, had my daughter sold to a molster in Daton and am compleatly suicidaly homicidal toward the serial rapist police officers here like the El Pasco WA.. Shit.

You can play JF2 just fine in DOSBOX, just set the cycles to 12000 in order to have 486-33 performance which will make it buttery smooth.
You can even play the original JF, but you need to set the CPU type as 386-prefetch in DOSBOX settings.

Awesome game, good upgrade from the original Jetfighter game.

Played this game for hours on end.
Was addicted. From 20,000ft and 10 miles out could dead stick land on the aircraft carrier 3 out of 5 times. Missions were amazing. Never grew tired of this game.
Unbelievably realistic and relaxing escape.
Why this game was discontinued I have no idea. Would have bought upgrades without batting an eye.

My friend and I would play this all the time in the early 90s. We would take two chairs one in front of the other. One of us would run the controller, who would fly the plane and the other would sit right behind the pilot with the key board and run that. It was like the real thing so fun when we were Kids

Loved this game. Exactly right mix of flying and tactics. Does anyone remember you could land a plane UPSIDE DOWN (i.e. inverted?). Also, some missions, you could land and then shoot down other aircraft with missiles, whilst stationary! My favourite was flying round the Golden Gate Bridge, both over and under the spans...

A clean installation of Windows 10 ready for software and apps to be downloaded and a device that not only sports premium materials like an Apple product but can at times cost a little less while sporting better components. If the Surface line from Microsoft isn't quite what you're looking for, there are a collection of partnered manufacturers who also release Windows 10-powered PCs. Why are windows computers better for gaming than macs. Attractive third-party hardware. Then you have the, which is a beast for creative individuals.
I love this game back then. I STILL have it on an old pc. It's in storage.
I used all Thrust Master controls. Had a self made/dyi sound/game chair.
I wish the company had improved the graphics & left the game basically the same. Also wish they had made it multi-player.
Their following Jet Fighter games were MAJOR disappointments. I followed them ALL. STILL have them all. The last one IS beautiful BUT, They left out an important thing, the auto-pilot feature. BUMMER huh? I now have more video AND processor power. I hope they'd come out with another JS2.
Check Six fellas,

remember playing this in early 90's. Fun game. Sometimes I would not fly the mission, just go to LA airport and avoid being attacked. Flying around S.F. Oakland area fun. Remember to land and it gives you more fuel..don't remember if that gave you reloaded weapons..

There is a (sort of) bombing target cheat. If you cut your engines to 30% and then go to external view, when the target gets between your wing and a certain part of the cockpit, if you release bombs you get really high accuracy..

I think I still have the manual somewhere (photocopied, of course). Reloaded and tried to play again a few years ago, but it always crashed when loading a game, which someone told me was the way in which it addressed video memory. Anyone still able to play it today with their original files? Is this download a modified file that works with today's computer technology? Eric, emuench at gmail

I bought this with my first 386 computer back in 1991. It was better than anything out there. I loved this simulator. I still think about it. What I can't figure out is why it was so far beyond ALL the other flight sims out there, and no one seemed to notice--weird world we live in.

Excellent game ! Many fighter jets and options to chose from.
At first i had doubts that this flight sim from 1990 (!) could make the difference to other empty looking, sterile and boring flight simulators from around that time. But honestly, this blew me away. It´s better than many of today´s simulators. This has some kind of an open world, california to be precise, which is also pretty detailed.
What i really love about this game is it´s dynamic campaign and that the 'carrier-crew' or your commanders react to many situations caused by the player. Fantastic ! It also features some kind of action camera views.
If you give this game a chance, you won't be disappointed.

This game was one of my favorites as a teen. At one point I even got a Thrustmaster flight control stick that I believe was based on the F-15 stick. It was awesome. Fully customizable, you just created a text file to assign each button a command within the game. I wish there was a good simulator out there now.

Simply install dosbox, and then drag the jf2a.exe onto the dosbox desktop icon. It will load and start - however you might get a hung 'deactivating mouse' msg or it might start then go back to a c dos prompt. At this point simply type jf2 again at the dos prompt and then it will all work just fine.

I bought the game disc for my home PC when it originally came out. Just as many reviews say, it was a great game for the time. This may seem a streatch, but I can get the same flight views with Jetfighter II as I can get with Microsoft Flight Simulator X with the obvious exception of graphics clarity.
